Art Statement

“These deeply human and richly textured fiber art quilts by Boston based textile and multi-media artist and educator Susan Thompson celebrate deepconnections between family, community, spirituality and other shared cultural experience”

Kevin Wery – Bunker Hill Community college

The pieces that are on exhibition at the Midway Gallery are a sampling of art works created by artist, Susan Thompson from 2000 through the present. Art quilts and mixed media are the focus of her art practice. She transforms fabric by dying, drawing, waxing, sculpting, printing, embellishing and sewing. She incorporates encaustic painting on various surfaces to create sculptural forms.

A recurrent theme in her work has been acknowledgement, recognition and love of the Ancestors who extend back into the beginning of humankind. She states that it is the call of the ancestors that compel her to create art. That is the reason so many of her artworks are dedicated to them.

For Susan, art is her means of reaching out and sharing her gifts with others. Through fabric, color and texture, she creates designs, tell stories and strives to communicate the truth as she knows it. Art enables her to express the deep and abiding love which fires life.
